CRTC roundup

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has approved Rogers Media's acquisition of the Citytv television stations in Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver from CTVglobemedia. The approval requires Rogers to sell CHNU-TV Fraser Valley and CIIT-TV Winnipeg within the next 12 months, in accordance with CRTC policy on common ownership. Rogers must also maintain independent news departments and separate presentation structures for its Citytv and Omni stations.

The CRTC has approved Astral Media's acquisition of 53 radio stations and two conventional BC television stations from Standard Radio. Astral's purchase also includes advertising sales company IMS and content provider Sound Source Networks. Astral total of 81 radio stations will make it the largest radio broadcaster in the country, according to the company.
