CRTC hosts international anti-scam meeting

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission recently hosted a meeting between regulators from Canada, Australia, Ireland, Hong Kong and the United States intended to improve their joint efforts to combat spam and other forms of fraudulent communications. The meeting, called Combating Scam Communications, was the first in-person event of its kind, according to the CRTC. Its focus was on current initiatives, the problems of cross-border enforcement and possible future forms of international collaboration to disrupt scam communications.

“Unlawful spam and unwanted calls continue to be major threats to consumers around the globe,” said Ian Scott, chairperson and CEO of the CRTC. “Coordinating our efforts internationally is the only way we can tackle this issue. By doing so, we are increasing our chances of protecting our citizens from those engaging in illegal and damaging activities.”
