Plan International begins emoji promotion

Plan International Canada of Toronto has begun a promotion in collaboration with Twitter Canada and the United Nations. The initiative seeks to introduce a "Day of the Girl" emoji to represent international efforts to establish equal rights for girls. The symbol will be rolled-out between Oct. 8 and 12. Similar promotions are running in other languages, including French, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Bahasa Indonesian, Arabic, German, Turkish, Russian, Italian and Dutch.

"Every day, girls around the world are denied equal opportunity to become leaders, to make decisions that affect their lives, to raise their voices and be heard," said Caroline Riseboro, president and CEO of Plan International Canada. "That is why it's vital that we shine a light on these issues, whether in board rooms, classrooms or on our Twitter timelines. Conversations on Twitter drive meaningful dialogue in the real world, and we hope this emoji will spark a much-needed discussion on girls' rights in the lead up to International Day of the Girl."
