CRTC announces new lower-cost data-only mobile plans

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has begun an initiative intended to provide consumers with mobile data-only services at lower cost. According to the commission, telecommunications companies Bell Mobility, Rogers and Telus have committed to introduce new data-only service plans within 90 days. The new plans will begin at $15 for 250 MB of data per month or $30 for 1GB of data per month, available as pre-paid or post-paid options. The plans will be available on both 3G and LTE wireless networks.

"Canadians deserve to have access to a wide range of mobile wireless plans in the market," said Ian Scott, chairperson and CEO of the CRTC. "While the new lower-cost data-only plans represent a step in the right direction and provide more choice for Canadians, we remain concerned by the overall condition of the market. To this end, the review we will launch next year will look at the state of mobile wireless competition more broadly."
