TWO PACKAGED GOODS COMPANIES BECOMING ONE

Chesebrough-Pond's (Canada) and Lever Bros. will be united into a new company called Lever Pond's on April 8. Both companies are divisions of Unilever Canada. Advertising for Lever is done by J. Walter Thompson, Ogilvy & Mather and Ammirati & Puris/Lintas, all of Toronto. JWT, O&M and MacLaren McCann of Toronto handle advertising for Chesebrough. Chesebrough president Arthur Gonis will be president of the new company. On July 1 Lever president Peter Elwood will become president of Thomas J. Lipton, the food and beverage division of Unilever. Lipton's current president, Jim Benson, is retiring in June. The marketing departments for Chesebrough and Lever will be re-organized into two groups; one will look after personal care products and the other will handle fabrics and home care brands. There will be no changes in the agency line up, Unilever Canada president Lawrence Strong told Adnews yesterday. Lever markets products such as Sunlight laundry detergent and dish soap, Dove, Lux and Caress soaps and Snuggle fabric softener. Chesebrough markets bath care products such as Vaseline Intensive Care bath beads and foam bath, Pears soap, Q-Tips and Timotei shampoo.
