Moosehead Breweries stops Facebook advertising

Moosehead Breweries of Saint John, NB has announced that it will halt its advertising on Facebook and Instagram for the month of July as part of the “Stop Hate for Profit” initiative. The program is a joint effort of the Anti-Defamation League, the NAACP, Sleeping Giants, Color Of Change, Free Press and Common Sense. According to these groups, it is intended as a response to the failure of the social media company to effectively address hate speech on its service.

“As a brewer, we talk a lot about the Canadian values that define us,” said Trevor Grant, vice-president of marketing and sales at Moosehead Breweries. “Boldness, independence, strength of character, but also openness, inclusivity and warmth. More needs to be done to protect those values on the world’s biggest social platforms, and to end hate speech online, and we stand in support of this much-needed change.”
