UNITEL TO BECOME AT&T

Toronto-based Unitel Communications wants to capitalize on the name of its large U.S. shareholder, AT&T. The long distance reseller plans to change its name to AT&T Canada, although it has not yet decided when, corporate communications director Carleen Carroll told Adnews yesterday. Financially troubled Unitel completed a restructuring last month. AT&T Corp. of New York owns one-third of Unitel. The other two-thirds is shared by three banks: the Bank of Nova Scotia, Toronto Dominion Bank and the Royal Bank of Canada. Former owners were Canadian Pacific of Montreal and Rogers Communications of Toronto. CP had a 48% stake in the company, and Rogers had 29.5%.
