SPERMICIDAL SPONGE ON DRUG STORE SHELVES

There's a new birth control device on the Canadian market, called Protectaid. The vaginal sponge is made of polyurethane foam containing a combination of three spermicides. The product was developed by Axcan Ltd. of Mont. St-Hallaire, Que. The sponge is also being tested to determine if it prevents sexually transmitted diseases. Axcan began seminars this week to promote Protectaid to health care professionals, as well as a public relations push aimed at consumers. PR is being done by NATIONAL Pharmacom of Toronto. Axcan is not advertising the product.
