CRTC RESTRICTS JUNK FAXING

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has put restrictions on unsolicited faxing in B.C., Ontario and Quebec. Telemarketers must remove a recipient's name and number from their faxing lists within seven days of being asked. Currently they have 30 days to do so. Companies are also permitted to send unsolicited faxes from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. The hours refer to the time zone of the called party. The ruling applies to customers of Bell Canada and BC Telecom Inc. In 1995, Bell's Ontario customer service desk received more than 1,600 complaints about unwanted faxes. The majority of the complaints dealt with the time of day the fax was received.
