ONTARIO WINERIES HOPING FOR SWEET SUCCESS
By Adnews Staff
'Liquid gold' flowed freely as twenty-four Ontario wineries launched the 1995 vintage of Ontario Icewine in Toronto last week with a wine tasting. Icewine, a sweet desert wine, is also referred to as liquid gold. Over the last several years, Ontario Icewines have received top awards at prestigious international wine competitions. To make Icewine, grapes are harvested when frozen naturally on the vine at minus eight degrees or colder. The grapes are pressed while still frozen resulting in only the most concentrated juice being extracted. The resulting wine is very sweet and is a popular complement to dessert. The wines, which should begin appearing in retail outlets in mid-November, will be sold across Canada and internationally. The 24 wineries participating in the tasting are all members of the Wine Council of Ontario. Advance Planning & Communications of Toronto is handling PR for the launch of the council members' Icewines.
