Coke, Pepsi ready Super Bowl ads

Coca-Cola will break a new television commercial during the broadcast of the Super Bowl on Feb. 4. This will be the first time in eight years that the company has advertised in Canada during the Super Bowl. The ad, called “Video Game,” is part of the company’s “Coke Side of Life” campaign. It depicts a video game character who spreads happiness instead of violence by distributing Coca-Cola in the streets of a city. “Video Game is a larger-than-life ad, so we think it's only fitting that we share it with an extensive viewing audience such as the Super Bowl, one of television's ultimate appointment programs,” said Angie Balian, group brand manager for Coca-Cola. Additional elements of the “Coke Side of Life” campaign will be introduced in Canada over the next several months, but no details are available.

Pepsi-QTG Canada of Mississauga will also debut a new television commercial during the Super Bowl broadcast. The Diet Pepsi ad, called “Make-Out,” was developed by BBDO Toronto as part of Pepsi’s ongoing “Forever Young” campaign. In it, a couple in their 30s fantasize about what it would be like to “make-out like they used to” in public places like a grocery store and a parent-teacher interview. “We’ve had tremendous success with the Forever Young campaign, so it made sense to unveil the new spot to Canadians during the Super Bowl,” said Richard Burjaw, vice-president of marketing at Pepsi-QTG Canada. “The spot is funny and fresh, so we hope it will contribute to the viewers’ enjoyment of the game.”
