Mobile television declared exempt from CRTC regulation

The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission has ruled that mobile services which offer television programming through a wireless handset, such as a cell phone, are exempt from regulation by the body. These services, currently offered by Bell Mobility, Rogers Wireless and Telus Mobility, in conjunction with MobiTV, were determined to fall within the CRTC’s New Media Exemption Order, which applies to services that are delivered via the Internet. “The commission considers that exempting mobile television services promotes innovation in delivering television to Canadians without adversely impacting the ability of licensed broadcasters to fulfill their obligations under the Broadcasting Act,” said CRTC chairman Charles Dalfen.
