GM HAS NEW CHAIR
By Adnews Staff
U.S.-based General Motors is giving president and CEO Jack Smith the added role of chairman as of Jan. 1. He replaces John Smale who will head up a newly formed executive oversight committee of the GM board. Smale became chairman in a 1992 revolt that was triggered by billions of dollars in losses from GM's North American operations. At GM he installed the brand management system that he knows well from his years at Procter & Gamble. At P&G he held the post of chairman and he still plays a role similar to the one he is taking on at GM. The car company is planning to turn the key on its brand management system in January.
