UNITEL GOES AFTER BELL

Toronto-based Unitel Communications has asked the Bureau of Competition Policy to investigate the advertising practices of Canada's big phone companies in the Stentor Group. In particular, Unitel is miffed by ads that compare the potential savings of weekend long-distance calls with the most expensive rates charged on weekdays. The company believes Stentor should compare discounted weekend rates with what the consumer would regularly pay on a weekend. Stentor, which includes Bell Canada, is a consortium of Canada's provincial phone companies. Officials at Stentor were unavailable to comment on the situation. The bureau is investigating the claim. If it finds there is a violation of the act, it will turn the case over to the attorney-general of Canada.
