Three banks conduct fraud prevention campaign in Quebec

Desjardins Group, National Bank and Laurentian Bank have begun a joint promotion in Quebec as part of Fraud Prevention Month. Called "I keep it to myself," the intent of the effort is to raise public awareness of fraud prevention. The campaign focuses on the need for consumers to protect their personal and banking information online in order to prevent identity theft. The campaign includes a website at <http://www.ikeepittomyself.com> that offers a collection of information on the subject, as well as quizzes and videos.

"Our personal information is extremely valuable and sought after by fraudsters," said Benoit Dupont, a spokesperson for the campaign. "Date of birth, mother's maiden name, name of elementary school; these are only a few examples of personal information that can be used to steal identities. While we must not get overly paranoid, we must clearly understand what we're exposed to so we can do our part to limit the risks. The campaign will help people become aware of what type of information they provide, sharpen their reflexes, limit information access and disclose less information on public websites and, overall, to be more cautious online."
