Indigo conducts Go Set a Watchman promotion

Toronto-based book retail chain Indigo has begun a promotion to support the release on July 14 of the novel Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee. The promotion began with the selection of Lee's first novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, as the June selection for Indigo's World's Biggest Book Club, a Twitter-based book discussion group. The company will follow that with a contest component. Consumers who purchase the book before Aug. 1 will be entered into a draw for one million points in its Plum Rewards loyalty program.

Indigo is also participating in a promotion in collaboration with publisher HarperCollins and theatre chain Cineplex to show the film adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird in five theatres nationally. Screenings will take place in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa and Halifax. Each show will also feature a 30-second commercial for the new book.

"This was one of the biggest, and best, surprises of the year so far," said Bahram Olfati, senior vice-president of print at Indigo. "We could never have imagined that Harper Lee would release a new novel, nearly 55 years after her first. As the transcript has been kept a tightly-held secret, our entire team is eagerly waiting to get our hands on a copy, along with everyone else, on July 14th. We, along with the millions who have read and loved To Kill a Mockingbird, are looking forward to seeing how the amazing and influential characters turned out."
