AST COMPUTER SOLD AT WAL-MART
By Adnews Staff
U.S.-based AST Research began selling its Advantage! computers in U.S. Wal-Mart stores last month in a bid to increase its share in the lower end of the home computer market. Selling for less than $1,000(US), the machine contains an Intel 486 chip with 66 megahertz of speed. It has Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 95 operating system, a 540-megabyte hard drive, eight megabytes of memory, a quadruple-speed CD-ROM drive and a 14-inch color monitor. It is also loaded with software, including word processing and financial planning programs. An AST representative said this month that the company currently has no plans to sell the machines through Wal-Mart stores in Canada, but he wouldn't speculate on the future.
