Rogers to buy ten CTVglobemedia television services

Rogers Media has entered into an agreement with CTVglobemedia to acquire a number of its conventional and specialty television services. The agreement includes the six A-Channel stations CIVI Victoria, CHWI Windsor, CKNX Wingham, CFPL London, CKVR Barrie and CHRO Ottawa. It also includes CKX-Television, a CBC affiliate in Brandon, MB, as well as educational broadcasters ACCESS Alberta and Canadian Learning Television. The deal also includes digital specialty channel SexTV. The all-cash transaction is valued at $137.5 million. “The acquisition of these 10 television services will significantly expand our television operations and solidify our position as an important participant in the Canadian television industry,” said Rael Merson, president of Rogers Broadcasting. “This also complements our strong position in Canadian radio, sports broadcasting and publishing.” These assets are currently under the control of John McKellar, trustee under a voting trust agreement involving CHUM Limited. CHUM and McKellar are also parties to this agreement. The transaction is subject to CRTC and Competition Bureau approval, as well as CRTC approval of CTVglobemedia’s acquisition of CHUM.
