COMPUTER MAKERS SLASH PRICES

Personal computer makers are in another one of those periods when they they slice the prices of older models to make way for newer ones. Compaq Canada slashed its prices last week up to 28% on servers and 20% on Presario personal computers and low-end laptops. Its U.S. parent lowered prices as well. Next month it is launching a new line of Presarios. Apple Computer reduced prices on some of its Macintosh Performa models by up to 11% in Canada and the U.S. IBM Canada lowered prices on its higher-priced commercial desktop computers as much as 26%. Earlier this month, it cut prices on its lower-cost Aptiva, ThinkPad, Ambra and PC 3000 lines by as much as 18%. At the same time, IBM introduced four new Aptiva models, and a new ThinkPad notebook computer. Three of the new Aptivas, the A40, A52 and A92, have six-speed CD-ROM drives, and the other, the A44, offers a four-speed CD changer that stores up to four discs. Late last year, Hewlett-Packard cut prices in North America on three of its Vectra models. In January, H-P introduced three new Vectra PCs that use Intel's Pentium Pro processor.
