NATIVES TRAINING TO BE BANKERS

The Bank of Montreal has branches in native communities across Canada, so it has decided it would be a good idea to have natives working in them and eventually running them. The bank is one of the sponsors of a pilot project in Ontario that has natives attending Centennial College and working at bank branches in a professional banker apprenticeship program for aboriginal people. Thirty candidates began working in bank branches this month and they will start a 24-week course at the community college in January. Other sponsors of the program are Human Resources Development Canada, Ontario Training Adjustment Board and Miziwe Biik Area Management Board Toronto, a non-profit organization that helps native people with training and job opportunities.
