COMPAQ TOP SELLER WITH CONSUMERS, H-P RISING FAST
By Adnews Staff
Texas-based Compaq Computer Corp. is till far and away the top seller of personal computers in the world, with sales of 1.5 million in the second quarter of 1995. But Hewlett-Packard is moving up at the most heated pace, according to figures from the market research firm Dataquest Inc. In its rankings for the latest three-month period Dataquest shows IBM in second place with 1.1 million units, and Apple Computer third with 1 million. NEC, Packard Bell and H-P rank fourth, fifth and sixth. But H-P, with 520,000 shipments, showed a 55.2% increase in sales over the same period last year, a significantly higher rate of growth than the any of the other companies had. Dataquest sees H-P continuing its hot growth because it is moving into the home market. Until now the U.S.-based company has sold mainly to corporations.
