NEW GAME SYSTEM FROM NINTENDO
By Adnews Staff
Vancouver-based Nintendo of Canada is introducing its 32-bit 3-D video game system, called Virtual Boy, to the Canadian market on Aug. 14. The machine is being launched by Nintendo in the U.S. at the same time. North American TV advertising will begin on that day to promote the system. It was created by the Leo Burnett Company of Chicago. Its Toronto office localized the ads for Canada. The ads focus on the system, as well as a joint promotion between Nintendo and Blockbuster Video stores. Beginning Aug. 25, consumers can rent Virtual Boy at Blockbuster. With each rental, consumers will receive two $5 software mail-in rebate coupons. The promotion will run until Dec. 31. In Canada, Nintendo is sponsoring the MuchMusic Video Awards being held in Toronto on Sept. 28. All advertising for the awards show will carry the message about the Blockbuster Video/Virtual Boy promotion. Virtual Boy is a tabletop unit that has full-depth perception, stereo sound and complete rotational movement.
