Star Media Group closes The Grid

The Star Media Group has ceased publication of its Toronto-based free weekly newspaper The Grid. Both the print and online editions have been folded. According to the company, The Grid was unable to generate sufficient revenue to continue operating. The shutdown has resulted in the loss of 22 journalism, design, production and sales jobs. The publication was launched in 2011 to take the place of Eye Weekly, the company's previous free city paper. The Grid was aimed primarily at downtown residents of the city in the 20s and 30s. It had a print distribution of 70,000 per week and a monthly audience of approximately 350,000 unique visitors.
