Toronto Silent Film Festival conducts Instagram campaign

The Toronto Silent Film Festival has begun an advertising campaign called "The Instagram Time Machine." The campaign, developed by Cossette, focuses on the 100th anniversary of the first film appearance of Charlie Chaplin, which took place on Feb. 2. The creative makes use of a series of linked images at photo sharing website Instagram. The images are arranged so that viewing them through the site's Thumnail Mode creates an interactive timeline of the actor featuring facts and video clips. Chaplin will be the theme of this year's festival, which will take place from April 3 to 8.

"Trying to be as innovative for the festival as last year wasn't easy," said Matthew Litzinger, co-chief creative officer at Cossette. "Instagram is a medium that references the past in a lot of ways. We wanted to see just how far we could go with this idea. Throughout his life Chaplin had a knack for doing things no one else had seen in film. It made sense to try and do the same with a medium as relevant to 2014."
