SHAW GETTING OUT OF PAGING

Calgary-based Shaw Communications has put its paging division, Shaw Mobilecomm, up for sale. The company wants to focus on its core businesses. Its main holdings are in cable television, but is also has radio stations, telecommunications interests, a share in YTV, Sega Channels, Digital Music Express and the wireless communications provider Microcell. It sees growth possibilities in the areas of PC access, fibre optics, TV programming and direct-to-home satellites. Shaw plans to apply for an orbital slot for two direct broadcast satellites. RBC Dominion Securities will organize the sale of Mobilecomm by auction. Shaw got into the paging business last May when it bought CUC Broadcasting Ltd. It added National Pagette Messaging last November. Shaw Mobilecomm is now the third largest paging company in Canada behind Bell Mobility Cellular of Montreal and Rogers Cantel Mobile Communications of Toronto. Advertising for Shaw Mobilecomm is done by Marshall Fenn Communications of Toronto.
