By Adnews Staff
The Canadian Direct Marketing Association presented its Environmental Recognition Awards last week. These are given each year for outstanding commitment and significant contribution to environmental responsibility in three categories: integrated, internal and consumer programs. The awards were given out recently at CDMA's National Convention and Trade Show in Ottawa. Over 1,300 people attended the event, breaking a record set in Toronto in 1993. Data Focus, s division of Data Business Forms Ltd., walked away with the award for integrated programs. The specialized printing company removed a variety of actual and potential contaminants from its manufacturing process. In addition it has met necessary requirements to register five production sites under Environment Canada's EcoLogo program. Regal Greetings & Gifts won the internal programs category. Regal has a Partner for Growth program in which it plants trees to replace those used in the production of catalogues. The company uses biodegradable cornstarch-based chips, which dissolve in water, for packing mail order items. It also pays customers for every shopping bag returned to its retail outlets. The consumer programs award was given to Centra Gas Ontario for its Enertips bill insert series produced in 1995. These inserts reached 220,000 customers with messages about energy efficiency. A Certificate for environmental entrepreneurship was given to Art for Children Clothing, a division of Garling Fashions. The company designs, manufactures and sells a line of children's clothing made from 100% recycled cotton.
