NEW H-P MACHINE COMES WITH SCANNER

U.S.-based Hewlett-Packard unveiled new models in its Pavilion line of home computers this week, including one with a built-in scanner. The new souped-up computers will come to the Canadian market this spring, marketing communications manager Doug Garnett told Adnews yesterday. They have storage drives going up to 2,000 megabytes, surround-sound stereo and and 6X-speed compact disk drives. The 7130P has a built-in scanner that allows users to do things such as feed photos and documents into the computer, edit them and send them over the Internet. In the U.S., advertising for Pavilion is being handled by Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising Worldwide of New York. H-P hasn't yet decided whether Saatchi's Toronto office will localize the U.S. ads for the Canadian market or do original creative. During the fourth quarter of 1995 H-P more than doubled its number of PC shipments in the U.S. The company boosted market share to 4.5% from 2.4% for the same period a year earlier. H-P's competition is not sitting still. Acer America launched its new Aspire line on Feb. 13, AST Research introduced its new Advantage! line on Feb 20 and Gateway 2000 recently announced its new Destination multimedia PC which has a monitor that can display high quality television images.
