SOUTHAM TO BUY DAILY

Toronto-based Southam Inc. is set to buy The Standard in St. Catharines, Ont. The newspaper chain has signed a letter of intent to buy the family-owned daily, as well as affiliated businesses including two smaller Ontario dailies in Port Hope and Cobourg and commercial printing plants in Guelph, Ont. and St. Catharines. The deal is expected to close in May. The Burgoyne family has owned The Standard since 1892. The Standard has a weekday circulation of 38,300.
