IMASCO BUYING RIVAL DRUG CHAIN

Montreal-based Imasco Ltd. is buying Big V Pharmacies of London, Ont. for $243 million. Imasco owns the Shoppers Drug Mart chain of pharmacies. Big V operates 135 drug stores, mainly in southwestern Ontario. Big V will operate independently next year and will subsequently be converted to the Shoppers format. Advertising for Big V is done by Leadley Advertising of Windsor and Thomas Watt Cohen McCall of London. Shoppers Drug Mart ads are created by TBWA Chiat/Day's Toronto office. The deal is subject to shareholder and regulatory approval. Shoppers Drug Mart has 718 locations in Canada.
