COMPUTER COMPANIES CUTTING PRICES
By Adnews Staff
A price war is heating up in the computer market. U.S.-based Hewlett Packard slashed prices in North America on its Vectra desktop PCs by up to 18% last week. The move came less than a week after Houston-based Compaq Computer lowered its prices by up to 25%. International Business Machines cut its prices on its corporate PCs by as much as 26%. Digital Equipment Corp. of Maynard, Massachusetts, lowered the prices on its HiNote laptop computers by up to 30%. H-P has led the corporate price-cutting rounds since last Christmas, but last week it was upstaged by Compaq. Separately, H-P is introducing six new models of its Vectra XU PCs in mid-September based on the 120 megahertz and 133 megahertz Intel Pentium microprocessor.
