SWISS COMPANY BEATS IBM AND APPLE TO THE PUNCH
By Adnews Staff
A small Swiss company has modified the software that runs Apple computers so that it can be used on an International Business Machines computer, according to a report in the trade magazine MacWorld. The move by Quix Computerware puts pressure on IBM and Apple Computer to bring an IBM Mac clone to market. Both companies, along with Motorola, co-developed a microprocessor called PowerPC to run personal computers. Apple began using the chip in its Macintosh line last year and IBM just recently started selling a PC using the chip. But IBM uses AIX and OS-2 operating systems instead of Apple software to run its PowerPC machines. Quix cannot develop or market computers based on the modified software without permission from Apple. Apple has not shown interest but IBM has, according to MacWorld.
