LOTUS INTRODUCES TRADE-IN OFFER

U.S.-based Lotus Development went head-to-head with Corel Corp. of Ottawa last week with a North American offer that allows purchasers of qualifying Corel products to trade in their applications for a CD copy of Lotus' SmartSuite for Windows 95 or Windows 3.1. The offer runs until Dec.31 and applies to purchases of Corel WordPerfect Suite 6 and 7, or Corel Office Professional 6 and 7, on or before Oct. 1, 1996. A proof of purchase is required to take advantage of the offer. In addition, all buyers of SmartSuite 96 from Sept. 26, 1996, through Dec. 31 are eligible to receive a $65 mail-in rebate, plus a free CD upgrade to SmartSuite 97, which is scheduled for release in January. The offer is being promoted through Lotus' web sites in Canada and the U.S. In Canada, print advertising touting the SmartSuite offers will appear in print nationally by the end of November. Details on the creative for the ads have not been finalized. Lotus is making the transition from its previous agency Doner Schur Peppler of Toronto to its current incumbent Ogilvy & Mather, which has a Toronto office. The switch-over is to be completed by Jan. 1. Cohn & Wolfe of Toronto is handling PR for the SmartSuite campaign.
