National Public Relations buys Equicom

National Public Relations has acquired investor relations firm Equicom from TMX Group of Toronto. According to the company, the purchase will result in the creation of the largest investor relations and financial communications practice in Canada. Equicom's services will be used to supplement National's existing financial communications operations in Toronto, Calgary and Montreal. The deal also includes a multi-year referral agreement with TMX Group. No financial details are available.

The agency will be renamed National Equicom and will be headed by Ronald Alepian, who wast most recently chief communications officer and senior vice-president at CA Technologies of New York. Prior to that, he was vice-president and group head of corporate marketing and communications at TMX Group. Alepian was also vice-president of global communications at Nortel and senior director of corporate and financial communications at Bell Canada. He has also worked at Cossette and National. Equicom's management and client staff will remain in place.

"With the addition of Equicom, National can now offer a level of strategic support to clients that is unmatched by any firm in Canada," said Andrew Molson, chairman of National's parent company, Res Publica Consulting Group. "Deep investor and capital markets know-how complements our existing integrated communications capability to provide support and counsel that directly contribute to our clients' business success. We're incredibly excited that Equicom's talented team is joining National."
