Preventable readies accidental injury awareness campaign

Vancouver-based non-profit organization Preventable is preparing an out-of-home advertising campaign in British Columbia intended to raise awareness of preventable injuries such as falls, car accidents, poisonings and drownings during the holiday season. The campaign will makes use of holiday-themed video ads that will run in movie theatres in the Lower Mainland, Victoria and Kelowna from Dec. 14 to 28, both on-screen and in lobbies. The ads will also be projected on the side of the Sears Building in downtown Vancouver for six hours per night for four nights. "Too many people believe that serious injuries only happen to others and when we get caught up in the excitement of the holidays it's easy to forget that they can and do happen to anyone," said Ian Pike, executive director of Preventable. "Our holiday campaign is aimed at shifting people's attitudes and beliefs, so that they will consider their actions and prevent injury to themselves or their loved ones this season. Our Christmas jingle encourages holiday-goers to play it safe whether they're leaving a party after a few drinks and thinking of driving, leaving a holiday roast cooking unattended in the oven, or lighting up the Christmas tree without checking if the wires are faulty first." Preventable is operated by the BCAA Road Safety Foundation, the Insurance Bureau of Canada, London Drugs, the BC Ministry of Labour, Pacific Blue Cross, Telus and WorkSafeBC.
