Plan Canada promotes anti-malaria campaign

Toronto-based charitable organization Plan Canada has released an online video as part of its "Spread the Net" campaign to raise awareness of and funds for malaria prevention. The campaign was timed to coincide with World Malaria Day on April 25. The 45-second video features comedian Rick Mercer and encourages Canadians to donate funds that will be spent on anti-mosquito bed nets in Africa. The campaign also includes social media activities and a website at <http://www.spreadthenet.ca>.

"We're all terrified of shark attacks, grizzly bears and snakes," said Mercer. "But the mosquito is actually the deadliest creature in the world. Each year, fatal diseases spread by mosquitoes kill two million people across the globe. Over 627,000 of these deaths are due to malaria, a deadly but preventable disease that kills one child every 60 seconds."
