IBM CREEPS INTO FIRST PLACE

IBM Canada of Markham, Ont. has regained top spot in the Canadian market for desktop, laptop and server computers. The company had 13.5% of the market for the first half of the year, overtaking Compaq Computer of Richmond Hill, Ont., which had 11.8% according to Stanley L. Jacobs Research Inc. of Oakville, Ont. Compaq knocked IBM out of first place last year. Apple Canada was a distant third with 6.3% of the market, followed by AST Canada with 6.2% and NEC Corp. with 4.7%. In the desktop market alone, IBM lead the way with a 13.6% share, followed by Compaq with 12.3%, Apple with 6.9%, AST with 5.6% and NEC with 4.1%. In the laptop market, Markham, Ont.-based Toshiba of Canada was the biggest player, with 20.9% of the market. IBM had 14.7%, followed by Compaq with 9%.
