CANADIAN PRESS DODGES THE BULLET

Canadian Press this week managed to avoid the total catastrophic collapse many industry experts had been expecting, when Toronto-based Southam Inc. reversed its June 26 decision to pull out of the national news-gathering co-operative at the end of the year. Encouraged by this new tone from CP's largest single member, the other 69 member newspapers withdrew their threats to abandon the service rather than face paying for it without help from Southam. Not everyone was delighted, however. CP president David Jolley has left his post just eight months after accepting it, although no one seems willing to say exactly why. Things will not exactly be smooth sailing at CP in the near future, however. Over the next six months the members of the board will undertake the task of revamping the organization, streamlining its services and cutting costs.
