Toronto billboard by-law to go to City Council

The City of Toronto Planning and Growth Management Committee voted on Nov. 4 to send a proposed billboard by-law to the City Council to be voted on at its next meeting. The unanimous committee vote occurred despite a request from the Out-of-Home Marketing Association of Canada that the presentation of the bylaw be delayed for a month for further consultation with the industry. The by-law proposes a new tax for billboards in Toronto, the proceeds from which would be used to fund public works of art. The by-law has been championed by an organization called the BeautifulCity.ca Alliance. The Toronto City Council will consider the by-law at its Nov. 30 - Dec. 1 meeting.
