PEPSICO GIVES AWAY PAGERS IN PROMO

PepsiCo of Purchase, New York has teamed up with several other comapnies to give away 500,000 beepers to teenagers as part of a new promotion for its Mountain Dew softdrink. Pepsico plans to use the beepers to link its customers in a special network offering prizes and discounts. Pepsi will beep the network users once a week with a promotional message and chances to win prizes from sponsor companies. The promotion begins later this week. Teens who want to get in on the action must send PepsiCo proof of Mountain Dew purchases and $29.99, for which they receive the beeper and six months of free service. Sony Corp., Motorola Inc. and MTV are taking part in the promo. In Canada, Pepsi-Cola is only running its Pepsi Stuff promotion over the summer, Canadian marketing manager Michel Papineau told Adnews yesterday. This was launched in North America last month. People collect points with the purchase of softdrinks, which they and cash in for items such as sunglasses, T-shirts and leather jackets.
