NETCOM OFFERS FLAT RATE

Toronto-based Netcom Canada has dropped its rates in a bid to pick up more subscribers. The company began charging a flat fee of $26.95 a month for Internet access last week. The company is backing the launch of the new deal with a print ad campaign created by Two Door Communications of Toronto. Pegi Gross & Associates of Toronto bought media. The introduction of the flat rate, which allows unlimited Net access, followed the launch of a $19.95(US) flat rate by Netcom's California-based parent the previous week. Netcom started operating in Canada last December. Its original monthly prices were $12.95 for six prime hours (8 a.m. to midnight) and 240 non-prime, or $24.95 for 25 prime hours and 240 non-prime. Ottawa-based IStar offers 90 hours for $29.95 a month. Pathway Communications of Toronto provides 150 hours for $29.95. In the U.S., AT&T Corp. and MCI Communications are offering long-distance subscribers five free hours of access a month and unlimited monthly packages for $19.95(US).
