Spotify debuts carbon neutral ads

Streaming audio service Spotify has introduced a new advertising option called Sustainable Sonics in the UK, US and Canada. According to the company, clients who use this option will have their advertising on Spotify matched with carbon offsets intended to result in a neutral environmental impact. These offsets will be provided by trees planted by Forest Carbon in the UK and Bolivia. The service will become available on Earth Day, April 22. The first advertiser to make use of the service will be UK-based mobile communications provider O2.

“The conversation around sustainability in advertising has often focused on traditional forms of media like billboards, television commercials and out-of-home,” said Amanda Hoyle, creative strategist at Spotify Advertising. “At Spotify, we wanted to broaden this conversation to include digital advertising and audio in particular. Sustainable Sonics marks the launch of a new future of audio advertising, one that looks to make a green solution even greener with carbon neutral audio spots. We’re extremely excited to welcome O2 onboard as our first partner and can’t wait to bring this offering to centre stage for advertisers globally.”
