Metroland fined by CRTC

Community newspaper publisher Metroland Media Group has been fined $240,000 by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission for violations of its Unsolicited Telecommunications Rules. According to the commission's findings, Metroland used an automatic dialing device to make unsolicited calls between January 2012 and July 2013 without including a telephone number and mailing address at the start of the message. Metroland has also agreed to implement a compliance program to avoid similar violations in the future.
"We would like to thank Canadians who receive unsolicited calls for taking the time to file complaints," said Manon Bombardier, chief compliance and enforcement officer at the CRTC. "Accurate, timely and complete information is essential to the success of our investigations, and it helps us protect Canadians. We are pleased to report that Metroland cooperated with our investigation and has changed its telemarketing practices."
