ATLANTIC PROVINCES TO PAY MORE FOR PAPERS
By Adnews Staff
Consumers in the Atlantic provinces will pay more for magazines, books and out-of-town newspapers under the GST harmonization, and will likely get their magazines and newspapers later than other parts of the country, a Periodical Marketers of Canada release says. "The tax-in price will force wholesalers and retailers to put stickers on every copy because the cover prices will no longer apply. To sticker every copy will involve extra labor and the cost will have to be passed on to consumers in calculating the new cover price," PMC spokesperson Ray Argyle says in a release. "In addition, there will be delays in getting out-of-town newspapers and newsmagazines to newsstands of at least a day, and in some cases more." Some retailers may drop reading matter altogether because they don't want to cover up the original price. Argyle says the solution would be to remove the GST from all reading matter. The PMC hopes to have negotiate further with provincial and federal authorities to have the change made before the harmonization goes into effect next April. This week the federal government removed the GST from some books such as those bought by schools.
