Google, Nestle form Android marketing agreement

Internet company Google has formed a marketing agreement with food and beverage company Nestlé. Through this agreement, the next version of Google's operating system for mobile devices will be called Android KitKat, after the candy bar of the same name. Google has named each version of its operating system after an alphabetical sweet food since 2009. Previous names have included Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean. This will be the first time a brand name has been used.

To coincide with the release of Android KitKat in October, 50 million specially-branded Kit Kat bars will be distributed in 19 markets, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Japan, the Middle East, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The packages will direct consumers to a website at <http://www.android.com/kitkat>, where they can win prizes including Google Nexus 7 tablets and credits for the Google Play online store. In addition, a limited number of candy bars in the shape of the Android mascot will be distributed.

"We're excited to announce this partnership with Android, the world's most popular mobile platform, which will help us to enable even more Kit Kat fans to enjoy their break," said Patrice Bula, head of marketing at Nestlé. "Kit Kat is one of the world's top ten fast-moving consumer goods brands in social media in terms of fan numbers and engagement. We continue to build on its strong digital presence with interactive, creative branding campaigns."
