MAPLE LEAF DROPS GROCERIES

Toronto-based Maple Leaf Foods is getting rid of its grocery products division to help pay debts incurred in a billion-dollar takeover of the company. The products in the division will be shifted into other divisions. The products include Tenderflake lard, Nutriwhip dessert topping, Klik and Kam luncheon meat, Maple Leaf flaked canned meats and Michelina's frozen entrées. Its cereal and baking mix businesses have already been sold. Maple Leaf was taken over four months ago by Wallace McCain after he was deposed in a family coup from his position as head of McCain Foods of Florenceville, N.B.
