YWCA begins domestic violence awareness campaign in Calgary
By Adnews Staff
MacLaren McCann has begun a new campaign for the YWCA of Calgary to raise awareness of the problem of domestic violence in the city. The campaign began last week and will run for the next three weeks. Several hundred purses have been distributed around the city, left in high-traffic areas and intended to look like they have been accidentally left behind. Each purse contains a series of cards. On one side, each card reads, “Sometimes women lose more than just a purse.” The other side reads, “Trust. Self respect. Life. These are just some of the things that Calgary women lose each year as a result of domestic violence.” The cards also display statistics about domestic violence and contact information for the YWCA. “The great thing about the campaign is that everyone who finds a purse can help, either by making a donation to the YWCA or by leaving the purse in another location so that someone else can find it and look inside,” said Debbie Dalen, associate director of communications at the YWCA of Calgary. Depending on the success of the campaign, the initiative may be renewed next year.
