ROYAL BANK LAUNCHES CLASSIC PROMOTION

The Royal Bank launched a promotion this week for its Classic Visa card holders called Boxing Day Comes Early. Card holders were sent a mini-catalogue in their statements showing items they can purchase through a 1-800 number. The goods on sale include electric shavers, Walkmans, cordless phones and toys. In addition, the bank launched a Shop for Free contest this week whereby 10 cardholders will win the total of all the Visa Classic purchases they make from Dec. 1 to Jan. 31, to a maximum of $5,000. Direct mail for these two promotions began this week, created in-house. Royal Bank is also eliminating all annual and transaction fees on its Classic credit card as of Dec. 1. Purchase security insurance has also been extended. It now protects purchases made with the Classic card against breakage, theft or loss for 90 days. An extended warranty automatically doubles the original manufacturer's warranty in Canada up to a maximum of one additional year.
