TORSTAR SHOWS A PROFIT

Toronto-based Torstar Corp. saw its profits climb in the third quarter ending Sept. 30. The company has reported a net income of $7.5 million, up from $4.9 million a year earlier. Consolidated revenues from Torstar's newspaper, book publishing, catalogue marketing and supplementary education divisions totalled $304 million, up from $275 million during the same period last year. Third quarter revenues in the newspaper division jumped 16%. This division also saw profits rise to $500,000 from a $3.4-million loss in 1994. For the nine months ending Sept. 30, Torstar had a net income of $27 million, compared to $26.8 million a year earlier.
