NIKE OPENS FIRST INTERNATIONAL RETAIL STORE IN TORONTO

Nike Inc. of Beaverton, Oregon opened its first international Nike-owned retail store in Toronto last week. Called Nike Toronto, the store is 23,000 square feet in size. It features two selling floors, each divided into distinct sports pavilions containing apparel, footwear and accessories. Each area showcases the latest sports products available from Nike. The store also has Nike's first hockey-specific pavilion, which concentrates on the company's technological advances in apparel, skates and equipment. A women's pavilion uses on-third of the store's selling space, and offers footwear, apparel and accessories in six product categories: soccer, tennis, basketball, running, all conditions gear and sports training. Nike Toronto will be promoted using radio, bus shelter and billboard ads, as well as posters and postcards in bars and restaurants. The campaign was created by Cossette Communication-Marketing of Toronto. PR is being done by Optimum Public Relations of Toronto. Nike Canada of Thornhill, Ont. will operate the store. Nike also plans to open retail stores in Sydney and Germany.
