ZELLERS KEEPS DISCOUNT ROOTS
By Adnews Staff
Toronto-based Zellers Inc. is staying in the discount business. The retailer opened two discount stores in the greater Toronto area this week called Best Value. The outlets are about 40,000 square feet in size and offer a wide range of products, but a more limited selection than a Zellers store. As Zellers opens more Best Value outlets, they may feature financial and pharmacy services as well. There will also be deep discounts on special purchases, over-runs and discontinued items. The stores will be promoted using newspaper ads and flyers created in-house. Zellers plans to open another five Best Value outlets in October and is slated take the chain national next spring. The majority of the Best Value sites are currently operating as Zellers stores, but are too small to accommodate the chain's new store formats.
